Executive Summary<\/h3><\/div><\/div>

This document provides an analysis of how artificial intelligence (AI) is capable of\nreinterpreting and visually presenting the works of M\u00f3r J\u00f3kai. The research focuses on a\nquestionnaire survey in which 250 participants took part. The task of the respondents was to\nevaluate AI-generated images that were inspired by the texts of J\u00f3kai's works. During the\nanalysis, data was divided into five main categories: visual style, historical accuracy,\n\ncharacter portrayal, technological implementation, and emotional and aesthetic impacts. The\nresults of the research highlighted that AI offers opportunities for artistic reinterpretation, and\nthe method of technological implementation and artistic fidelity are crucial for successful\napplication. The aim of the research report is to provide direction for further developments,\nduring which AI will be used to popularize the works of J\u00f3kai and other classic Hungarian\nauthors.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Introduction<\/h3><\/div><\/div>
\n

Our goal is to reinterpret and popularize the works of M\u00f3r J\u00f3kai using artificial intelligence.\nWhy do we consider artificial intelligence important in the analysis of Hungarian digital\ncultural heritage? ChatGPT is not human intelligence; it knows a lot but understands nothing.\nMany people are understandably wary of artificial intelligence, and we also see its dangers.\nBut we see it as a new adventure and a new opportunity to look at our lives and our common\nintellectual heritage from the perspective of an intelligence similar to ours but different in\nmany ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In preparation for J\u00f3kai's bicentenary, we collected the author's works available in digital\nform, cleaned and normalized the texts, allowing an AI model, specifically a custom-\ndeveloped GPT-based system, to process them efficiently. The AI revealed surprisingly many\nparallels between 19th-century texts and current issues of our time. A new, exciting,\nsometimes provocative interpretation of J\u00f3kai's works emerges from ChatGPT's responses.\nThe analyses and creative content provided by AI were supplemented with visual illustrations.\nFor this, we created an online questionnaire: this document contains its analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The objective of the questionnaire survey was to understand how readers perceive AI-\ngenerated images. We were particularly interested in whether these visual elements could\ncontribute to the dissemination and popularization of M\u00f3r J\u00f3kai's literary works. We also\nexamined which styles and settings participants preferred and how opinions about the images\nvaried based on individual patterns of interest in J\u00f3kai, age and education. The results of the\nresearch will be used to shape the commands and prompts for further image creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our research hypotheses included the assumption that there would be significant differences\nin participants' preferences depending on how much they like M\u00f3r J\u00f3kai and how many of his\nworks they have read. We also assumed that respondents would welcome visual experiments\nand the idea of placing 19th-century novel characters in the visual world of the modern era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A total of 250 people participated in the survey, which was conducted using a Google form.\nThe call to complete the questionnaire was published in various groups to ensure a diverse\nrange of respondents. These groups included students from Pannonhalma Benedictine High\nSchool and the Alternative Economics High School in Budapest; students of the University of\nP\u00e9cs, whom we reached through the Neptun system; members of various student and faculty\nFacebook groups at the University of Szeged; as well as staff from the MP\u00c9 editorial team,\nA38 ship, and Appsters Mobile Content Development Ltd., who were also asked to fill out the\nquestionnaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the questionnaire, we presented a total of sixty images to the participants, created\nusing ChatGPT. These images were generated in various ways: for some, we directly used\nM\u00f3r J\u00f3kai's detailed character and landscape descriptions as sources of inspiration. For other\nimages, J\u00f3kai's novels were used as a basis, which were uploaded to the ChatGPT system, and\ngeneral instructions were given to create the images. In certain cases, we used specific\nprompts to ask the AI to place J\u00f3kai's characters in a modern environment, thereby\nreinterpreting the original works. Finally, to demonstrate the diversity of creativity and styles,\nsome images were created in a cubist style or in the style of Mih\u00e1ly Munk\u00e1csy, thus further\nexpanding the diversity of the visual experiment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Methodology<\/h3><\/div><\/div>

When compiling the questionnaire, we aimed to provide participants with a sufficient number\nof images for a comprehensive evaluation, while also ensuring that completing the\nquestionnaire would take no more than 20 minutes. To find the ideal balance, we conducted\nseveral trial completions, asking participants to note how much time they spent on the\nquestionnaire. The results showed significant variance, but we ultimately concluded that\npresenting sixty images resulted in an average completion time of 20-25 minutes. Based on\nthis, we decided to retain this number of images, ensuring that participants could thoroughly\nexamine the images without the questionnaire being excessively long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the collection of standard demographic data, the questionnaire allowed participants\nto rate the presented images on a scale of one to five, with five being the highest score.\nAdditionally, the questionnaire included an open response option, enabling participants to\nexpress their opinions about the images in detail. Nearly fifty participants utilized this option,\nproviding valuable and diverse feedback on the reception of the images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Data collection was carried out in the last week of March 2024. The collected data was\nanalysed using Microsoft Excel and the statistical tools of ChatGPT, allowing us to perform\ncomprehensive and accurate analyses of both quantitative and qualitative data. The textual\nfeedback was also evaluated manually, ensuring that every response was analysed, giving us a\nprecise understanding of participants' opinions and observations.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Results<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The majority of the respondents who filled out the questionnaire belong to the 19-25 age\ngroup, which can be explained by the high response rate to the calls published at the\nuniversities of Szeged and P\u00e9cs. The high school age group is represented by students from\nPannonhalma Benedictine High School and the Alternative Economics High School. Both\nschools represent a high educational standard and cannot be considered average. The 25-40\nage group is the least represented, while the 40-50 age group has a surprisingly high\nproportion, almost as large as the youngest age group. The participation rate of the over-50\nage group is also low, which is expected for an online survey. The participation of different\nage groups can be important in interpreting the results of the questionnaire, as age can\ninfluence technological affinity, reading habits, and attitudes toward literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The majority of respondents, 69.3%, fall in the middle of the scale (3-4 points), indicating that\nthey generally like J\u00f3kai's works. The two extreme ends (1 and 5 points) are less common,\nwith fewer respondents giving the highest and lowest ratings. The fewest respondents chose\nthe "do not like" category, which may suggest that J\u00f3kai's works are among the most favoured\nliterary pieces among those surveyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The majority of respondents have read J\u00f3kai's two most famous novels, but it is also\ninteresting that 11.5% said they had not read either. Among the two novels, "The Sons of the\nStone-Hearted Man" was read by more respondents, though the difference is not significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The correlation analysis of the responses showed that there is no substantial relationship\nbetween demographic data and novel preferences, and more surprisingly, there is no\nsignificant correlation between these characteristics and the ratings of the images either. This\nindicates that individual taste and visual culture are more decisive in the evaluation of the\nimages than other factors examined in the questionnaire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most votes were received by landscapes created in an authentic historical style, with the\nnumber of votes indicated in the bottom right corner of the images. These images are\ncharacterized by elements of romantic realism, which manifest in the idealized yet detailed\nportrayal of the beauty of nature. The compositions follow a classic arrangement,\nemphasizing perspective and depth in the style of 19th-century Hungarian landscape painters.\nThe colour palette is rich in warm hues, with golden and autumnal tones, creating a dramatic\neffect. The play of twilight lights and shadows adds a deep, atmospheric quality and a sense\nof space to the images. The technique is delicate, precise, and realistic, with elaborated\ndetails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, portraits that reflect the spirit of the era received high ratings. The four portraits\nshown as examples are detailed and create a photorealistic effect. The colour palette is based\non warm and natural tones, ranging from beige to brown, blue, and grey, suggesting a sense of\ntimelessness. Their style is classic, reminiscent of 19th-century portrait painting. In the\ncompositions, the human figure is the central element, with a strong emphasis on body\nlanguage. The themes of the four images reflect respect for the past and traditions, further\nreinforced by classic attire and period settings, conveying timelessness and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prompts for image creation in these cases also followed the character descriptions from\nthe novels. For example, for the third image, we used this prompt: \u201cDescribe the character of\nEuthym Trikalisz from the novel and his appearance. Then create a portrait of him in the\nmanner characteristic of the 19th century, considering that Euthym is 60-70 years old and of\nTurkish descent.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lowest scores were given to images where we allowed the most freedom to ChatGPT. The\ncolour palette in each image is vivid and saturated, highlighting every detail and creating a\nfabulous, almost magical atmosphere. The depiction style is similar: realistic facial\nexpressions and body language that convey the characters' personalities while placing them in\nan idealized, often fantastical world. They present reality in an exaggerated, idealized form.\nThese images lead to a fantastic, idealized world where colour, light, and detail are prominent,\nand where natural beauty is presented in an idealized form. The characters and landscapes at\nthe centre of attention further reinforce this magical and perfected worldview. For example,\nfor the first image, we provided ChatGPT with this description: \u201cShow a beautiful, colourful,\nrealistic natural scene that evokes the mood of this quote: 'There are many troubles in the\nworld that one would like to help if one could. The questionnaire allowed respondents to provide textual feedback on the images. We\ncategorized the evaluations into five groups, which helped us analyse participants' reactions\nand opinions about the AI-generated images more deeply. The first category is visual style\nand artistic execution, where positive comments praised the detailed depiction and use of\ncolour, while negative critiques highlighted the stylistic inconsistencies and improper\napplication of artistic movements. The second category is historical and cultural fidelity,\nwhich assessed the historical accuracy and alignment with the era of the images. Here,\nopinions were divided between faithful and anachronistic representations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third category is character portrayal and thematic fidelity, which was particularly\nimportant in the context of M\u00f3r J\u00f3kai's works. Here, participants appreciated images that\nauthentically depicted J\u00f3kai's characters and reflected the atmosphere of the novels. However,\nnegative remarks were also made, criticizing deviations from the expected character\nportrayals. The fourth and fifth categories, which examined technological execution and\nemotional and aesthetic impacts, also showed significant variations. In these categories,\nparticipants positively noted the AI's ability for creative approaches, while their criticisms\noften related to the formulaic and emotionless nature of some AI-generated images. Here is an\nexample of an image that received a relatively large number of comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This image received a high score, with 926 points, making it one of the highest-rated images\nin the questionnaire. The following prompt was used to create it: \u201cCreate an illustration for\nthis novel scene \u2013 the setting should be 19th century, and the scene takes place on a grain-\ntransporting riverboat. The text: 'In the morning, when Tim\u00e9a woke up, she felt nothing of the\npast illness. The young nature remained victorious...'\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

        Conclusions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        The aim of the research was to examine how participants perceive images generated by\nartificial intelligence based on M\u00f3r J\u00f3kai's novels. The results indicate that the majority of\nparticipants positively evaluated images that remained faithful to the visual style and themes\nof J\u00f3kai's era. Landscapes with the characteristics of classical, romantic realism and period\nportraits received high scores, authentically reflecting the atmosphere of J\u00f3kai's novels and\nthe distinctive features of their characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Participants generally rated images that significantly deviated from the 19th-century style\nlower. Images containing modern or abstract elements, such as illustrations in cubist style,\nreceived lower scores because they often did not faithfully reflect the spirit of J\u00f3kai's works.\nSuch experimental images were considered more controversial and were found not to fit well\nwith the historical and cultural context created by J\u00f3kai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The research also showed that participants' preferences did not significantly differ based on\nage, educational background, or familiarity with J\u00f3kai's works. This suggests that sensitivity\nto visual styles and artistic approaches is more general and not tied to age or educational\nlevel. There was a general respect for the works among respondents, which positively\ninfluenced the reception of the images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Detailed, closely related images that used specific scenes or character descriptions from the\nnovels generally received better reception. When using AI-generated images, it is important to\nconsider the visual preferences of the target audience and historical accuracy. For images\ncreated for J\u00f3kai's works, it is particularly important that the style and tone of the images are\nin harmony with the world of the novels, as this can contribute to a deeper understanding and\npopularization of the works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
